The short answer: you usually cannot tell the difference between black mold and other mold species by color alone. “Black mold” has become shorthand for Stachybotrys chartarum, but dozens of mold species grow in dark green, gray, or nearly black colonies, and plenty of harmless molds look alarming. What actually matters is whether any mold colony is growing inside your home, because all indoor mold growth signals a moisture problem that needs to be fixed. That said, understanding what you’re looking at helps you make smarter decisions about urgency, testing, and when to stop handling it yourself.
Why Color Is a Poor Diagnostic Tool
Mold color is determined by the pigments in its spores and surface hyphae, not by how dangerous it is. Stachybotrys chartarum, the species most people mean when they say “toxic black mold”, is indeed dark greenish-black, but so are Cladosporium (one of the most common and relatively low-risk outdoor molds) and Aspergillus niger (frequently found on damp drywall and insulation). Meanwhile, some Aspergillus and Penicillium species that produce mycotoxins under certain conditions can appear blue-green or even white.
The only way to confirm a species is laboratory analysis, either a surface sample lifted with tape or a swab, or an air quality test that counts and identifies spores by type. Visual inspection alone, even by an experienced remediator, cannot give you a species ID.
What visual inspection can tell you:
- Texture: Stachybotrys tends to be slimy or wet-looking when actively growing on a chronically damp surface. Many other molds are powdery or fuzzy.
- Location: Stachybotrys requires material that stays wet for an extended period, think drywall behind a slow leak, ceiling tiles under a roof that has been dripping for weeks, or subfloor that never fully dried after a flood. If the surface dried out quickly, Stachybotrys is less likely.
- Smell: A strong, musty, earthy odor that intensifies when you disturb the area suggests active colonization. The smell comes from microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs), not from the mold color.
What “Toxic Mold” Actually Means
The term “toxic mold” refers to molds capable of producing mycotoxins, chemical byproducts that can be harmful when inhaled, ingested, or touched in sufficient concentrations. Stachybotrys chartarum is the most widely publicized mycotoxin producer, but it is far from the only one.
Important nuance: a mold colony does not always produce mycotoxins even when it is capable of doing so. Mycotoxin production depends on the specific strain, the substrate it is growing on, and environmental conditions. This is one reason blanket health claims about “toxic black mold” are difficult to verify, and why you should be skeptical of any source (or contractor) that makes sweeping guarantees about health outcomes based on a visual inspection.
What the science does support is that any significant indoor mold growth can cause or worsen respiratory symptoms, allergic reactions, and irritation, particularly in people with asthma, compromised immune systems, or mold sensitivities. The species matters less than the fact that mold is growing indoors at all.
How to Assess What You’re Looking At
If you’ve found a suspicious growth, here is a practical way to think through it before deciding on next steps.
Step 1, Estimate the size. The EPA’s general guidance uses 10 square feet (roughly a 3×3 foot patch) as a threshold below which a careful homeowner may be able to handle cleanup themselves using appropriate PPE. Growth larger than that, or growth in multiple locations, warrants professional assessment.
Step 2, Find the moisture source. Mold is a symptom. If you remove it without fixing the leak, the pipe drip, the condensation problem, or the drainage issue, it will return. Look for water stains, soft drywall, peeling paint, or a musty smell that gets stronger near a specific wall or floor.
Step 3, Consider the material it’s growing on. Mold on a non-porous surface (tile grout, glass, a painted concrete wall) is far easier to address than mold that has penetrated porous materials like drywall, wood framing, insulation, or carpet padding. Porous materials usually need to be removed, not cleaned.
Step 4, Note how long the moisture event lasted. Mold can begin colonizing damp organic material within 24 to 48 hours under the right temperature and humidity conditions. A burst pipe that was caught and dried within a day carries a different risk profile than a slow roof leak that went unnoticed for months.
What Not to Do
- Don’t bleach it and call it done. Bleach kills surface mold on non-porous materials, but it does not penetrate drywall or wood. The visible stain may disappear while the colony continues growing beneath the surface.
- Don’t paint over it. Encapsulation without remediation is not remediation. The mold continues to grow, and the paint will eventually bubble or peel.
- Don’t run fans directly at a large mold colony. Disturbing mold without containment spreads spores to unaffected areas of the home.
- Don’t ignore it because it “looks small.” What you see on a wall surface is often the visible edge of a larger colony growing inside the wall cavity.
- Don’t rely on home test kits for a species ID. Petri-dish grow kits sold at hardware stores tell you that mold spores are present in your air, which is true everywhere on earth, but they cannot give you a reliable species count or concentration.
When to Call a Professional Remediator
Call a mold remediation professional when:
- The affected area is larger than 10 square feet, or you find growth in more than one location
- The mold is on or inside HVAC ductwork (spores can distribute through the entire building)
- The growth is behind walls, under flooring, or in a crawl space you cannot safely access
- Anyone in the household has respiratory conditions, a compromised immune system, or is experiencing symptoms that worsen at home and improve when away
- You’ve had a water loss, flood, burst pipe, sewage backup, that was not fully dried within 48–72 hours
- You’ve already attempted cleanup and the mold returned
A qualified remediator will establish containment to prevent cross-contamination, use HEPA-filtered negative air machines to capture airborne spores, remove affected porous materials, treat structural surfaces, and verify clearance through post-remediation testing. That process is meaningfully different from wiping a surface with a cleaning solution.

Getting to a Clean, Dry Home
Remediation is only half the job. After affected materials are removed and surfaces are treated, the moisture source has to be permanently corrected, whether that means a plumbing repair, improved bathroom ventilation, crawl space encapsulation, or grading the soil away from the foundation.
